Zonguldak is one of the main centers of Turkey for the extraction and processing of coal. For more than 200 years, the provinces have been extracting the bulk of the fuel, not only for the country’s domestic needs, but also for export. This is the first and only museum of its kind in Turkey. History of Zonguldak Mining Museum
Zonguldak Mining Museum is closely related to the history of the mining industry in Zonguldak. Coal deposits in the province were discovered in 1822 and after 28 years, its commercial mining began, which continues to this day.
Mining Museum is relatively new. It was opened in December 2016. The area of the museum is huge – almost 7 thousand square meters. It accommodates not only exhibition halls, but also conference halls, warehouses, a library and administrative premises.
Visiting the museum, you will learn not only about the history of coal mining in Zonguldak, but also about the basics of topography, the formation of coal and fossils.
The museum is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, admission is free.
